A September 3, 2026 report from 2merkato, citing Ethiopian News Agency, records 8,499 coffee samples receiving quality inspection certificates through the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange during fiscal year 2025/26.

Trading and Inspection

Across commodities, ECX recorded Birr 48.83 billion in trades against a Birr 29.1 billion target. That total covers multiple commodities and is not coffee export revenue. The report also describes inspection services for cooperatives and direct-link traders outside the exchange’s own trading platform.

Buyer Perspective

Our practical takeaway is to ask which inspection documents apply to the specific coffee being offered. Aggregate certificate counts do not establish the quality or traceability of an individual shipment. Buyers can connect each document to a lot identifier, sampling date and agreed specification, then retain the corresponding sample assessment with the purchase record. Where several lots are combined, confirming how the paperwork maps to the final consignment can prevent ambiguity during approval and delivery. These are checks on a particular transaction; the annual totals provide context for the exchange’s activity.
