OSSREA and Bonga University convened an October 6, 2026 workshop in Bonga to review a women-focused coffee agroforestry and climate-finance pilot in Kaffa. Published on the EthioLatin Coffee website on October 14, the workshop report describes activities in Sheda and Gaweti in Bita Woreda, supported by Spanish Cooperation.
A technical presentation reported 411 existing and newly recruited farmers and 138 hectares in the project dataset. Some participants had planted, while planting for others was still expected. Discussions covered coffee and shade trees, vermicomposting, informed consent and cooperative management. The project is preparing a Plan Vivo carbon-credit pathway, with measurement and independent verification still required. The figures describe project participation and land records, rather than issued credits or verified farmer income.
Our reading is that buyers following Kaffa sourcing can use this update to ask how climate activities connect with the communities supplying their coffee. Useful questions concern tree survival, ongoing field support and how participants will share benefits. If a supplier makes a carbon claim, request the applicable methodology and verification records before using it in customer communications. Documenting the coffee’s origin and the environmental activity separately helps keep both claims clear.
